  3. NEW MANAGEMENT IN SPANISH R&D NETWORK

  7. Starting 1 Jan 1994, the management of the Spanish R&D Network,
  8. RedIRIS, will be transferred from Fundesco to the Higher Council for
  9. Scientific Research (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas -
  10. CSIC). Fundesco, a non profit foundation working in the telecommunications
  11. and information technology fields, was responsible during 1988-90 for the
  12. pilot phase of the program that in 1991 led to the establishement of
  13. RedIRIS services, a major part of which was the full integration into the
  14. Internet (ISOC News, Vol.1, No. 1 & 2).

  16. Although not specifically related to telecommunications, CSIC is the
  17. largest, nation-wide R&D organization in Spain in most research
  18. disciplines. RedIRIS will be operated from a new communications center
  19. under CSIC management close the the existing computer center. The last
  20. quarter of 1993 will be devoted to carry out a smooth transition of present
  21. services to the new management. The aim is to guarantee users quality of
  22. service avoiding any disruption or performance degradation.
